Yawn Patrol: Surviving the Flat Spells

Wilbur Kookmeyer Surfs Blacks Beach

Naps, MTV, and the Agony of Crummy Waves

When the ocean goes flat, the stoke doesn’t just disappear—it turns into a grueling cycle of boredom and naps. In Bob Penuelas’ “Yawn Patrol,” we follow Wilbur Kookmeyer through a 48-hour marathon of checking the surf only to find “crummy waves” again and again. Between frequent 1:00 PM nap times and staring at Daisy Fuentes on MTV, Wilbur’s life becomes a repetitive blur of leftover pizza and nonsensical thoughts. It is a hilariously accurate portrayal of the “flat spell” blues that every surfer faces when the desire to ride haunts them, but the swell refuses to show up.
