Trip to Nowhere

High Hopes and Crumpled Cash: The Reality of Surf Travel

In this classic 1990s strip, Bob Penuelas takes Wilbur Kookmeyer on a journey through the “luxury” of surf tourism. After gazing at high-priced packages to Bali and Fiji, Wilbur realizes his budget only covers a meager $25 in crumpled cash. Settling for the “Trip to Nowhere,” our hero embarks on a questionable boat ride that results in more physical trauma than perfect barrels. As he returns with a massive lump on his head and stars in his eyes, Wilbur delivers a signature deadpan observation: “Same price as last year.” It’s a hilarious jab at the rising costs of surfing and the lengths a “kook” will go to for a bargain adventure.

“Bummer.” — Wilbur Kookmeyer realizes his budget doesn’t quite reach Fiji.
