Epic Waves vs. Civic Duty at the Slasher Surf Club
The Slasher Surf Club is “unafraid,” but perhaps a bit too relaxed when it comes to legal formalities. In this classic Wilbur Kookmeyer strip by Bob Penuelas, the crew heads north in search of big waves, big trees, and big sharks. They hit the jackpot with a perfect, empty break, only to stumble upon a gruesome discovery: a skeleton and a surfboard with a massive shark bite.
While most would call the authorities, the boys decide that a police investigation would simply involve too much “red tape” and cut into their precious surfing time. They justify their delay by promising to call the police on Sunday night after they get home—ensuring their weekend remains “hassle-free.” It’s a hilarious, albeit dark, commentary on the single-minded obsession of surf culture.
